Winter Wellness Tips
It can be hard to remain healthy in the winter when the colder weather keeps you inside more than you would like. The long walks you enjoyed in the other seasons are impractical now because you would become uncomfortably cold within a few minutes. However, the cold air outside is no reason to stop exercising for the entire winter season. Below are a few tips from our pharmacist on other things you can do to remain active until you can enjoy the great outdoors again.
Some Tips for Burning Calories at Work
You can sneak in some exercise even if you have a job that keeps you stuck at a desk for much of the day. For example, park your car as far away as possible and walk to the door. When you need to speak to a co-worker, get up and walk over to his or her desk rather than sending an email. If your building has more than one floor, opt to use the stairs instead of riding the elevator. These things may seem small, but they can burn more calories than you might expect.
Tips for Making Healthier Choices During the Work Day
It is a nice gesture when co-workers want to share treats with each other and take turns filling the communal candy bowl. Unfortunately, indulging too often is not good for your waistline. That means you will need to walk by the candy dish more times than you stop to take treats from it. When your turn comes to bring treats, consider a healthier alternative such as mints or nuts. You will just need to make sure that none of your co-workers have a nut allergy before sharing that treat.
Packing a lunch for work each day is a healthier alternative than grabbing fast food. You have more control over the contents and can choose foods that are low in fat and cholesterol and high in fiber and protein. When preparing your lunch, aim for a lot of color in your fruits and vegetables as this provides you with both variety and nutrition.
Proper Hydration is Important for Wellness
People typically reach for water when they feel hot or when they are sweating. Since this rarely happens during the winter, water consumption goes way down. This can quickly lead to dehydration and other health problems. If you can’t seem to remember to drink water or you would like another alternative, consider green tea. Not only does it keep you hydrated, but it also contains antioxidants that give your immune system a boost. That can help you fight off colds and flu more effectively this winter.
