Symptoms of Fibromyalgia

Fibromyalgia is thought to occur due to a combination of different factors, such as genetics, infections and emotional or physical trauma. Those who have this disorder develop widespread musculoskeletal pain that affects both sides of the body for a few months or more. This pain occurs as a dull ache that is persistent, which can end up interfering with day-to-day life. Other symptoms of this disorder include fatigue due to the presence of sleep problems or disorders associated with fibromyalgia, as well as headaches and numbness in the feet and hands. Fibromyalgia can also cause trouble concentrating, making decisions and doing other cognitive tasks.  

Limited Effectiveness of Conventional Treatment

The types of medications that are typically used to manage symptoms of this autoimmune disorder have limited effectiveness. While some might provide short-term relief from pain and other symptoms, they are associated with unpleasant side effects. Other medications, such as antidepressants and anti-seizure drugs, don’t always produce noticeable relief from symptoms. 

Low-Dose Naltrexone

Naltrexone is considered an opioid antagonist that works by blocking endorphins. It has been used in higher doses to treat opioid addiction since 1984. When used in low doses, it has been shown to help regulate the immune system and reduce inflammation that occurs in the central nervous system. While the reason for these effects isn’t fully understood yet, some doctors believe it works by deactivating immune cells that are over-active. Others believe that Naltrexone works by stimulating the production of hormones that suppress pain, resulting in relief from chronic pain. 

Effectiveness of Naltrexone for Fibromyalgia

Although more research on the use of low-dose Naltrexone for fibromyalgia is needed, the studies that have been done show evidence of its effectiveness. In one study, patients with this disorder experienced reduced pain, improved mood and an overall improvement in their quality of life after taking this type of therapy. 

Safety of Naltrexone

Naltrexone for fibromyalgia is generally considered safe for many patients when it is given in low doses. It can provide an effective form of treatment without the unpleasant side effects associated with drugs approved for fibromyalgia treatment. However, it’s important to note that some patients do experience mild and temporary side effects, such as headaches, insomnia, and vivid dreams, during the beginning of this therapy. These side effects normally go away within one or two weeks after starting this treatment.
